There was quite a stretch of time, back when Katie Holmes first married Tom Cruise, that I really admired her style. She did a layout for InStyle that was just heavenly and ever since then, I’ve been watching her like a hawk to see what she’ll come up with next. But lately she’s been looking a little…sloppy. And although I love the Inspiration Monday challenge photo that the two lovely ladies over at Two Birds Boutique have chosen, I don’t think I would place it in the “polished” section of my inspiration folder (instead it went into Weekend Wear). Still, here’s our challenge for this week:
I love the high waisted/wide leg jeans, but I know for a fact that they will not be pretty on me. Those types of pant never fit my generous hips, but I figured I would try out what I do have in my closet (and have been dying to wear):
Jeans: Michael Kors, thrifted from the Rufe Snow Goodwill
Tank Top: Old Navy
Cardigan: Xhilaration from Target last year
Purse: Vintage Michael Kors, found on eBay
Sunglasses: Michael Kors
Shoes that you can’t see: Sofft, thrifted from Thrift Town in North Richland Hills
Okay, so I may appear to be a walking advertisement for Michael Kors, but that is purely coincidental! That purse is one of my favorites and I faithfully carried it daily until my back started aching, because of course, it was stuffed full of all kinds of things I didn’t need. And the jeans? Let’s just say they’re one of my thrifting highlights and I plan on doing a post featuring them later in the week. The sunglasses were picked up at the outlet store down by Austin and I absolutely love them.
I chose to go the tank top route, only because my gray t-shirts had a higher neck and they just didn’t look right with this cardigan. The cardigan, another favorite, has these cute gathered sleeves and a lace cut-out in the back. For mom comfort, this outfit receives high marks, as I was able to move about freely without worrying about showing anything. Maybe that’s why Suri’s mom chose it in the first place…
If you haven’t already, hop on over to Two Bird’s Boutique and see the other lovely ladies take on Mrs. Cruise!

your hips are far from generous…i think you’d look great in high-waisted jeans. but these ones are fabulous, too…i love your take!
My hips are not little, but I hide them well ;) Maybe one of these days I’ll grab a pair of high-waisters and rethink their worthiness in my wardrobe… ;)
very cute! love that cardigan from target. i bet you could rock high-waisted jeans. i thought i wouldn’t be able to pull ‘em off but my girlfriend MADE me try them on and i was surprised how flattering and fabulous they were!

Okay, I may just have to try some then. Do you have any suggestions on which ones to try? I am open to ideas!
I’ve seen a lot of women buy the GAP high waist ones. I haven’t tried them but I bet they would be a good pair to try (and a little less expensive). There are always the J Brand version which are definitely pricey, but nice… http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=521595&CategoryID=22038. I also have been eyeing a brand called “Mother.” They have these great high waist jeans. http://www.revolveclothing.com/DisplayProduct.jsp?product=MOTH-WJ16&c=Jeans&s=C&sc=Flare&n=n¤cy=USD&source=shopstyle
hope this helps (and BTW, think you’ve inspired me to write a post on high waist jeans :)
YES, write a post on high-waist jeans! Seriously, do. It’s one of those things I fear, like I’m going to be transported back to the late 80′s or something. (I obviously need to get over that fear and quickly…)
I’ll check out Gap’s-I try and avoid going in there, only because half the time I walk out much, much poorer than when I went in. The Mother ones? Super hot but WAY out of my price range. And J Brand is always amazing, but they never fit me right through the hips and butt (I end up with a gap in the back {not sexy}).
Thanks Claire!
while considering doing a post on it i saw some cheaper ones at urban outfitters but the only thing is most of them are skinny jeans (high waist). i bet you soon a ton of high waist jeans will come out and places like Forever 21 will have them. just hope it’s sooner than later!
I love these posts! I think you nailed this one!
I love them too! Thanks for the compliment Bestie!
Nicole, I know you are putting this outfit in your weekend wardrobe file but you look perfectly tailored to go out on the town for cocktails with the girls. I love this outfit on you…great bag too. I did not realize you were such a great thrifter!!! I have never found MK jeans at the thrift…lucky you! Thank for stopping by today…always nice to hear from you. Dawn Suitcase Vignettes xo
Those Michael Kors jeans were one of my best scores EVER. I almost fell over myself when I saw them on the rack-without even looking at the size I snatched them up. Like I said, I plan on doing a thrift post with them as the star ;)
As for wearing this out on the town for cocktails with the girls, you’re probably right. I might dress it up with a fancier tank top and a pair of wedges, but overall it is a really chic look.
Thanks for stopping by Dawn!
I agree that your hips are far from generous, though I like that phrasing:-) I do love those jeans too and can’t believe you found them thrift…after my upcoming move I’m going to start learning to thrift. Dawn has given me some great starting pointers and I can’t wait to put them to use. I love all your MK stuff, even if it was a conicidence;-)
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
I will admit, I’m a Michael Kors fan! I love the simplicity of his clothing and buy it whenever I can afford it or find it at the thrift store because his pieces are timeless.
Dawn’s “10 Things for Beginners” post was awesome, wasn’t it?!? I loved her Chanel shoes…when you look, it’s amazing what you can find and what other people will get rid of!
Thanks for stopping by Kara :)
MM – you’re so hot! Love that you’re doing the inspiration Monday. Thrifted MK jeans. Wow!
Every once in a while I score something as good as you do over there in LA Kris! Thanks for stopping by!
Your outfit is great! I can’t wait to read the post about those jeans. What a fantastic find!
Look for it Thursday Courtney-it will be my 10 Commandments of thrift shopping post and I’ll show all the other fantastic things I’ve found over the past couple of years!
Thanks for stopping by :)
Very cool and collected…

you look so cool and chic, I like your michael kors bag. Nobody will be able to tell they are all Michael Kors’s designs anyway.

Thanks Lori-I’m going to go check out the ones at The Gap after Claire’s suggestion. We’ll see how they look!
Forever 21 would be a good spot to check…I don’t think I’ve ever tried their pants before, but now might be a good time to start!
Thanks Claire!
